In a show of support for the government’s ambitious goal of constructing 100,000 houses, the Tlokweng Land Board recently hosted a high-level engagement with officials from the Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) and the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement. The meeting aimed to seek clarity and align efforts around the newly launched Bonno National Housing Program.

Led by Mr. Molebedi Khuduego, Deputy Director of the Department of Housing, and BHC’s Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Batanani Nkhumisang, the visiting delegation unpacked the structure of the Bonno Housing Program. They emphasized its strategic importance and outlined key schemes under the initiative: the Bonno Turnkey Housing Scheme, the Bonno Home Improvement Scheme, and the D4 and Below Housing Scheme. Additional schemes are reportedly in development to help meet the 100,000 housing target.

Officials highlighted the crucial role land availability and servicing play in the affordability and rollout of these schemes. Mr. Nkhumisang appealed to the Land Board to make land available and stressed the importance of partnerships with individuals, financiers, companies, and especially investors in delivering on this national priority.

Tlokweng Land Board Chairman, Mr. Elijah Katse, welcomed the engagement and commended the efforts to include land authorities as stakeholders in the housing drive. He emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to identify meaningful ways for the board to contribute.
Supporting this view, Land Board Secretary Mr. Seabelo Kemoreile stated that the board requires time to evaluate the availability of land and determine an appropriate partnership model to support the program’s implementation.

As the Bonno National Housing Program gains momentum, collaboration between land authorities, government institutions, and the private sector will be essential in unlocking affordable, decent housing for Batswana across the country.
