HON. MINISTER RAMOGAPI CHALLENGES BHC BOARD TO ALIGN STRATEGY WITH NATIONAL HOUSING AGENDA
The Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Honourable Onneetse Ramogapi, has urged the Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) Board to ensure that its Long-Term Strategic Plan is closely aligned with the Government’s priority of delivering 100,000 housing units within the next five years.
Speaking during the BHC Board Strategy Retreat held this morning at Phakalane Hotel and Conference Resort, Minister Ramogapi underscored the urgency of the housing mandate, stating that while the national target spans five years, his Ministry aims to deliver on this commitment within just three.
“Let us not lose sight of the President’s vision for this nation,” he said. “As the Ministry responsible, we expect BHC to adopt and implement a strategy that directly supports this goal.”
He further highlighted that this target is not only a national imperative but is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which promotes inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.
In response, BHC Board Chairperson Ms Boitsheko Ntshingane reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to driving the Corporation’s mandate with urgency and innovation.
“As we deliberate on the matters before us, we prioritise delivering the 100,000 housing units—and beyond—for our people,” she said. “At the same time, we must secure or inject funding, promote a targeted minimum living wage, ensure environmental protection, and advance the adoption of solar and alternative energy solutions.”
Ms Ntshingane reminded the Board that as the sole government housing authority in Botswana, BHC has no choice but to step up to the challenge. “We look forward to bold and exciting ideas, to proposals that spark conversations ahead of our time. And through it all, let’s remember this: It doesn’t matter where you are or what you have—it’s who you are,” she said.
The Board Strategy Retreat marks a critical moment in shaping BHC’s direction and impact, reinforcing its role as a key driver in Botswana’s sustainable development and national transformation agenda.
The Board Strategy Retreat runs May 23rd to May 24th, 2025.
