Botswana Housing Corporation recently handed over a total of 9 houses to Botswana Prisons Service at Mahalapye. The project was constructed for a total sum of P7.5 Million over 32 calendar weeks beginning last year.

Officiating at the handover ceremony the BHC CEO, Mr. Reginald Motswaiso said the Botswana Prisons Services took a decision to build nine (9) houses and associated site works and services and approached the Corporation to carry out the project on their behalf.
He revealed that the contract was awarded to MG Construction a locally owned construction company in line with the Government’s effort towards citizen economic empowerment.

Mr Motswaiso acknowledged that although it was successfully completed the project experienced some challenges associated with accessing the site at the beginning.
“The contractor had challenges with synchronising proposed housing units to plot sizes and this meant that they had to be physically measured and the layout modified to allow for works to begin. This contributed to delays at the start of the project. Nonetheless we eventually managed to reach a common solution and moved ahead with the construction of these houses, hence this handing over activity,” He said.

He noted  that the Botswana Prisons Service’s cordial relationship with BHC was built and strengthened over the years adding that it could be demonstrated through a number of construction projects the Corporation have undertaken successfully on their behalf.

“We have in the past two years successfully delivered a total of two (2) blocks of flats for BPS staff in Gaborone, at Village. The project was completed early last year following which they entrusted us with yet another similar project in Francistown, which was also completed and handed over successfully. We are currently building 10 houses at the Village in Gaborone which are almost complete and will be handed over in October this year,” Said Motswaiso.

He further alluded that the Botswana Prisons Service’s continuous engagement of the Corporation is a clear demonstration that they have confidence in the Corporation’s capabilities as a housing delivery arm of the Government, with the knowledge and expertise to do the projects.

In his acceptance speech, the Botswana Prisons Service Commissioner Mr Silas Motlalekgosi expressed his gratitude to the Corporation for the successful completion of the project. He said that the houses will curb lack of accommodation which is currently facing the prisons service.

Mr Motlalekgosi stated that the Botswana Prisons Service will continue to engage the Corporation in similar projects around the country. “As evidenced by this successful project and many others, we will continue to engage the BHC in all similar projects around the country,” He said.

In support of the SADC prisons games hosted by Botswana Prisons Service that week and as a goodwill gesture, the Corporation pledged P10 000 towards the activities.
